Become a Local Nerd.
OkieNerd is friendly, in-home tech help for folks who don't speak computer. The house calls are made by Local Nerds, independent contractors who live near the towns they serve. You apply to your own market, set your own availability in the Nerd HQ app, and keep the majority of every booking.
- Independent contractor opportunity
- You set your own availability
- You keep the majority of every booking
- Typically $47 to $87 an hour
One network, a brand for each state.
OkieNerd is a Nerd Dispatch brand. Nerd Dispatch runs one in each state it works in, each with its own name and its own Local Nerds, and all of them on the same Nerd HQ app.
Your own market
You apply to the market you live in. It reaches 75 miles from its downtown, across a state line if the towns are there, and you choose how far out you drive.
Bookings through Nerd HQ
Customers book the hours you open in the Nerd HQ app, for iPhone and Android. Your visits and your pay are there too.
Independent contractors
Local Nerds are 1099 contractors, not employees, under a written agreement you read and sign before your first booking.
Help people with everyday tech.
You're helping regular folks with the phones, laptops and TVs they use every day, patiently and in plain English.
In-home visits
Show up, sit down next to someone, and fix it in person.
Travel calls
The farther travel bands reach the small towns around your market, and they pay a higher hourly rate because the drive is longer.
Remote follow-ups
A call and a shared screen, for customers who were set up for remote follow-ups in advance.
Every booking takes a deposit up front and holds the customer's card, so the money is settled through the app and never negotiated at the door. When you finish, you hand them your phone: they confirm the work is done, add a tip if they want to, and the rest charges itself. You never ask anyone for money, and you never carry cash.
You set your availability. Customers book it.
You keep the majority of every booking, and every tip is yours. You see the split up front, it's paid on every completed job, and tips are paid out weekly, in full.
You set your own availability. Open up the times that suit you in Nerd HQ. A few evenings a week or full-time, that part is your call.
Bookings come through the Nerd HQ app. Customers book the open time you publish, with buffer time built in around each visit.
Paid per completed booking. No clock to punch, no salary, no minimums.
You're independent. Your own tools, any reliable and presentable vehicle, and free to work elsewhere whenever you like.
We bring the customers. OkieNerd handles the brand, the booking, and the payments, so you focus on the fix instead of finding work.
You're part of a team.
You run your own schedule, and the other Local Nerds have your back when a job gets strange.
Nerd HQ
Your visits, hours and pay live in the Nerd HQ app for iPhone and Android, and HQ is one phone call away when you need a hand.
Regular team meetings
We get the team together regularly over Google Meet to share wins, swap fixes, and keep everyone pointed in the same direction.
In-person team building
Now and then we meet up in person, so you know the folks you're swapping fixes with.
Find your city on the map.
Pick your town to see the ground a Local Nerd there covers: the city and everything within 75 miles of its downtown, in three travel bands. Each market also has its own page, in the list below.
Don't see your town on the map? Apply for the city nearest you and tell us where you live. Markets overlap on purpose, so you tell us which queues you want to take bookings in.
Local Nerd jobs by city.
Every market has its own page: the towns you'd cover, what the drive looks like, and the questions people there ask.
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Kansas
Help build your town, if you want to.
Want to help OkieNerd grow where you live? Leave a stack of your cards on the counter at your favorite donut shop. It's welcome and never required. We print the cards, and it helps your own market. Your time is always your own.
One form, then a real conversation.
Apply online. About five minutes. We ask what you can support and how you work. The answers are below.
We read it. One of us reads every application, and if it looks like a fit, we'll email you a short pre-screen.
Pre-screen on your phone. Two quick videos and one typed answer, about fifteen minutes. A person watches every one.
Interview. A thirty-minute video chat to meet you and walk through the role together.
Background check, and we pay for it. Only after we've talked. Our customers invite us into their homes, so everyone is screened. You enter your details with our screening provider, never with us.
Onboarding, and you're live. We set you up in Nerd HQ, the app that runs your visits, hours and pay, plus a short orientation, and you're ready for your first booking. Want to rep the brand? Order gear at wholesale, shipped to you.
What the form asks
- Your name and the best phone number to reach you.
- Your city or area, and your ZIP, so we know which market you'd serve.
- Your tech experience, in your own words. No resume needed.
- What you're comfortable helping with: computers, phones, Wi-Fi and networks, smart home, TVs, printers, the everyday stuff.
- Your general weekly availability: mornings, evenings, weekends, whatever your week looks like.
- A quick yes that you have reliable, presentable transportation and a valid driver's license.
- A quick yes that you're okay with a standard background check.
- Which devices you own and how you'd rate yourself on Windows, Mac, networking, tablets and phones. Be honest. A low score costs you nothing.
- Optional: a line on why you want to do this. It's the answer we remember.

It takes about five minutes. We read every one.
Start your applicationThis page describes an independent contractor opportunity and is not an offer of employment. Local Nerds are independent contractors, not employees: you set your own availability, use your own tools and vehicle, and are free to work elsewhere. Compensation is a revenue share paid on completed bookings. Participation in optional brand or community activities is voluntary, and only pre-approved out-of-pocket costs are reimbursed. Nothing on this page guarantees any level of income or booking volume.
